FAQs for the Servers blade in Nerdio Manager
This article answers common questions about managing servers in Nerdio Manager.
How do I attach a public IP to a server?
To associate a public IP with a server VM in Nerdio Manager, at the account level, navigate to Network > Public IP > Associate.
For more details, see Overview of Public IPs.
Can I enable or disable Azure Hybrid Benefit (AHB) after creating a server?
Absolutely. Azure Hybrid Benefit (AHB) is a great cost-saving method of pre-paying for your OS licenses from your CSP provider instead of paying for the Pay-As-You-Go OS license costs.
-
To enable the AHB feature in Nerdio Manager, on the Servers blade, in the Description column for a VM, select OFF next to the AHB setting.
What is a proximity group and why would I use it?
A proximity placement group is a logical grouping in Azure that ensures compute resources are physically located close to each other. Proximity placement groups are useful for workloads where low latency between VMs is required.
Once proximity placement groups are enabled in Nerdio Manager, your servers and AVD hosts will be placed in the same proximity group by default.
-
To enable proximity placement groups for a server, on the Servers blade, in the Description column for a VM, select OFF next to the Proximity group setting.
Can I auto-scale a server like I do a host pool?
Yes. Similar to Nerdio Manager's AVD auto-scale options, you can choose to automatically start, stop, re-size the VM SKU, change the disk performance time, or run scripts. For more details, see Auto-scale Settings for Servers.
How can I change from a dynamic IP address to a static IP address?
Generally, for servers, it’s best practice to assign an internal static IP address so that it always has the same IP address.
With Azure VMs, instead of setting the IP in the NIC settings in Windows, you can do it at the Hypervisor level.
-
To set a static IP address in Nerdio Manager, from a server's action menu, select Manage IP.
Can I securely connect to a server without a VPN connection?
Nerdio Manager offers two ways of connecting to an Azure VM without requiring a permanent public IP or a VPN connection:
Generate an RDP file: This feature has been available for some time. For details, see Generate an RDP File.
Console Connect: A new offering that allows you to quickly connect from a browser session anywhere in the world. For details, see Enable Console Connect (remote support).
For any questions about either of these connection options, please reach out to your Partner Success Manager.
Do Scripted Actions and Unified Application Management (UAM) work on servers?
Yes. Just like with AVD host pools and Intune-joined devices, you can run and schedule Scripted Actions and Unified Application Management (UAM) deployments on your Azure servers as well.
For more details, see:
Can I add or reset the password for an administrator account?
Yes. When a password is lost, instead of recreating a VM, you can reset the password for an existing admin account.
-
To reset a local administrator account for a server, AVD host, or desktop image VM, in Nerdio Manager, from a VM's action menu, select Change password.
Note: This action creates a new local user account that is added to the Local Administrators security group. Any existing local administrator accounts remain unchanged.
