AVD host boot diagnostics

Boot diagnostics for a host pool cannot be configured

It would be nice if we could disable this in the host pool properties (like we can in Nerdio Enterprise)
Or at least select a managed storage account

I think we recently had a similar idea/request posted for this: Log Analytics Cost Optimization – Nerdio Help Center

Does this match with your request or is your use-case a bit different?

Hi Dave,

I think our use-case is a bit different
We just don't want/need the boot diagnostics of the avd hosts

In the related Nerdio Knowledge base article, Overview of Boot Diagnostic Insights – Nerdio Help Center, there is a screenshot showing this option.
But I cannot find this in the host pool properties

So I thought it would be useful to have a similar option like we have in Nerdio Enterprise

Ahh. Thanks for clarifying, Koen.
Sorry about that. I saw "diagnostics" and completely glanced over the part for Boot Diagnostics.

It's setup a bit differently in NMM vs NME.
In NME, it's simply capturing the boot diagnostics screen as you can find in the Azure portal.
However, in NMM, we're using Azure AI to analyze the boot diagnostics screen.

I agree, something simple where we're just able to see/download a screenshot would be nice.

For your question about "not seeing the setting in host pool properties, do you know if you've enabled Boot Diagnostic Insights at the account level?

This still is not exactly what we are looking for.  We don't have the need for viewing the boot diagnostics screen.

The issue is every time we create a new host, Nerdio is automatically creating a new storage account to save boot diagnostics data
And this is creating an unnecessary cost

We are looking for a solution to prevent this with one of these choices

  • Enable with managed storage account
  • Disable boot diagnostics

In NME this is a setting in the host pool properties

And I cannot find a similar setting in NMM

Thanks, for clarifying Koen.

I think I finally understand what you're trying to say (sorry, I'm a little slow on this one).
You want to be able to specify the Boot Diagnostics storage account that's utilized.

Do you think you'd want this as a per-hostpool setting or would a per-account setting make more sense for your use-case?

No Problem

As my reply took over 3 months, I wasn't the fastest either ;)

I think a per-hostpool setting would be more useful than a per-account setting
In some cases it can be useful to have different boot diagnostics settings on multiple host pools in one account

Thanks, Koen.

I agree. Per-hostpool seems to make the most sense.

I'm wondering if we will need to put somekind of filter (maybe an Azure Tag?) for the boot diagnostics storage accounts so you're not needing to swim through all of your storage accounts if you have a lot of them? It might be a non-issue for most though.

At the very least, I'm thinking having the ability to create a new storage account (if one doesn't exist) would be a nice feature for this.

We'll have to see what our Product Team can create when they go to reviewing/implementing this idea! 😎
