Let's talk API use cases!
First Post
Welcome to the community, Adam Basalyga!
As someone mentioned in the API Breakout session at NerdioCon, there are a number of existing posts in other places in the forums
Search results – Nerdio Help Center (getnerdio.com)
Besides the PowerBI integrations that Kevin mentioned, you could use the API for messaging end-users (Messaging/Delay Message – Nerdio Help Center (getnerdio.com)) (in theory, if you integrate into the Microsoft Graph API and send a teams message as well (Send a Notification Before the Session Time Limit – Nerdio Help Center (getnerdio.com)))
If you're feeling extra fancy, you could use the API to convert your cost estimation into production by creating the Account and setting-up the host pool; Convert Nerdio Cost Estimate into Production – Nerdio Help Center (getnerdio.com)
We're not actively using at our company, but plan on starting to put it into use. 🤓
Great post DStephenson, I would say the top two use cases we are seeing right now are backup and cost estimator. Both have a high degree of utility, backup for operations and cost estimator for closing new business and delivering on the implementation.
Thanks!
Seeing some common Backup and Cost Estimator examples would be awesome for a webinar, Kevin Murray. Or, is that something more likely to be covered in one of the Advanced Nerdio Training Camps?
DStephenson, can I say both. LOL. I like where your head is at. I will speak to Carl Long about a potential webinar. The Advanced Camp does cover backup. We can certainly include Cost Estimator in with the mix as a takeaway.
Haha. Exactly!
Why make a choice when you can have both? 🤣
Thanks!
Looking forward to the content, however it is delivered. 🙂
Hey Dave,
Having done this advanced training camp already, I really think you're going to like what you get out of it. The nice thing about a lot of API programming is the rinse and repeat aspect - if you can pull the backup info, you're probably 90 percent on the way to something else. With the time I've had available since attending I've got a couple of GET requests that pull different things - backups from the day of camp (thanks again Kevin!), then I've started pulling different things related to different environments and both all and and a particular cost estimate. Now I'm familiarizing myself with the data I get back and how I want to ingest it, what I'm looking for in the data, and figuring out some of that what to do with it.
I really like your Teams message idea - even though not all of our customers use Teams, maybe we could do something different. One thing I've thought of too is maybe once a month/quarter pulling different pieces of the environment (fslogix settings, scaling logic...) and throwing the raw json file into our documentation system - that way I have a backup of the running configuration on this date, that date, etc, that way if I ever need to go back and figure out what is different or panic rebuild, I've got it.
I haven't tried any PUT requests yet to actually do anything, but I'm looking forward to trying one here soon.

Very cool, Adam Baldwin (and welcome to the community 🙂)!
I'm going to have some "free time" in the next few weeks.
I'll have to dig into this some more and see if I can figure out this "API blind spot" that I have until the next Advanced Training Camp. 😄
Adam Baldwin - Your update makes me so happy! Knowing that we were able to provide value, insight and engagement around your API journey confirms the value and need that we hoped the community was looking for. Looking forward to seeing where this goes and how you are able to operationalize, automate and simplify processes with Nerdio.
