Drain Mode - Deactivate Hosts During Scripted Actions
Nerdio Manager for MSP allows you to configure hosts to enter Drain mode — preventing new user sessions from being established — until all assigned scripted actions have completed processing. This ensures that hosts are not made available to end users before they are fully configured, reducing the risk of users connecting to an incomplete or misconfigured environment.
This option is particularly useful in environments where scripted actions perform critical post-provisioning configuration, such as installing software, applying registry settings, or joining domain resources, where connecting users mid-process could cause errors or inconsistent experiences.
The tasks in this procedure are performed at the customer level.
Prerequisites
Nerdio Manager roles
The following Nerdio Manager roles allow you to configure host scripted action settings:
- MSP Admins can configure Drain mode and scripted action settings for host pools.
Enable Drain mode for scripted actions
- In Nerdio Manager for MSP, navigate to the target customer account.
- Go to AVD and select the host pool you want to configure.
- Open the host pool’s Scripted Actions settings.
- Locate the option to Deactivate hosts until scripted actions complete (or equivalent Drain mode option).
- Enable the option.
- Click Save.
How Drain mode works with scripted actions
When this option is enabled, the following sequence applies each time a new host is provisioned or a scripted action runs on an existing host:
- The host is placed into Drain mode immediately, preventing new user session connections.
- Nerdio Manager runs the assigned scripted actions on the host.
- Once all scripted actions have completed successfully, Drain mode is automatically lifted and the host becomes available to accept user sessions.
Note: If a scripted action fails, the host will remain in Drain mode. Check the task logs in Nerdio Manager to identify and resolve the failure before the host is made available to users.
