Azure Capacity Extender Auto-revert

Azure Capacity Extender Auto-revert

When Azure Capacity Extender provisions an alternative VM SKU due to insufficient capacity for the desired SKU, the Auto Revert option automatically reverts those hosts back to the original SKU during a configurable maintenance window. This ensures that temporary capacity substitutions don’t persist indefinitely, keeping your host pool configuration consistent without requiring manual intervention.

The tasks in this procedure are performed at the customer level.

Prerequisites

Azure requirements

  • Azure Capacity Extender must be enabled for the target host pool.
  • The host pool must have an original/desired VM SKU configured that Capacity Extender may substitute when capacity is unavailable.

Nerdio Manager roles

The following Nerdio Manager roles allow you to configure Capacity Extender settings:

  • MSP Admins can configure Auto Revert and maintenance window settings for host pools.

Enable Auto Revert

  1. In Nerdio Manager for MSP, navigate to the target customer account.
  2. Go to AVD and select the host pool you want to configure.
  3. Open the host pool’s Auto-Scale or Capacity Extender settings.
  4. Locate the Auto Revert option and enable it.
  5. Configure the Maintenance Window during which the revert should occur:
Setting Description
Start Time The time at which the maintenance window begins. Choose an off-peak window to minimize impact on active users.
Duration How long the maintenance window remains open. Nerdio Manager will attempt to revert substitute SKUs to the original SKU within this window.
Time Zone The time zone used to evaluate the maintenance window start time.
  1. Click Save to apply the configuration.

How Auto Revert works

When Azure Capacity Extender cannot provision a host using the original/desired VM SKU, it falls back to an alternative SKU. With Auto Revert enabled, Nerdio Manager monitors for the availability of the original SKU and, during the configured maintenance window, replaces any substitute-SKU hosts with hosts using the correct SKU. The substitute hosts are deallocated and removed as part of this process.

Note: Auto Revert will only trigger during the configured maintenance window. If the original SKU becomes available outside that window, the revert will not occur until the next scheduled window.
