Generate an RDP File

Nerdio Manager allows you to create an RDP file for a server, a session host VM, or a desktop image. The file is downloaded and can be used to connect to the server, session host VM, or desktop image.

RDP File Generation Process Deep Dive

Nerdio Manager performs the following process when generating an RDP file.

Creation

  • Open Access to the server (Nerdio Manager)

    • JIT-PiP-<VMName>-<region> Temporary Standard Public IP is created

      • DNS name is generated

        <VMName>-<GUID>.<Region>.cloudapp.azure.com

  • Public IP is assigned/associated to the VM NIC

  • NSG is created/updated

    • NSG-JIT-<VMName>-<region>

      • Inbound JIT-Allow-RDP-<VMName>-<GUID> | Port-3389 | Protocol – TCP | Source -<YourPublicIPFromYourComputer> |Destination - <LAN IP of the VM>

  • Revoke access job is created (Nerdio)

    • Nerdio job is created to clean-up after the RDP timeframe has elapsed

  • Generate RDP file

Clean Up

  • Revoke access job is triggered (Nerdio Manager)

    • NSG rule is modified to remove the Inbound rule

    • The Public IP is removed/detached/disassociated with the VM NIC

    • The Public IP is deleted

Generate an RDP File

The following steps allow you to generate an RDP file.

Note: The Generate RDP file option is only available when the power state is On.

To generate an RDP file:

  1. At the Account level, locate the server, session host VM, or desktop image wish to work with.

  2. From the action menu, select Generate RDP file.

  3. Select the desired RDP options.

    Note: You can restrict which local resources are shared between the client and the server. For example, printers, copy/paste, audio, microphone, and local drives.

  4. Once you have made the desired selection, select Download.

    The RDP file is downloaded to your browser's default download path.
