How Does FSLogix Work in Nerdio Manager?

This article discusses the FSLogix Profile Container Solution implementation and best practices.

Note:

  • FSLogix is a powerful tool used to roam the user profile in a vhd or vhdx container.

  • Profile redirection requires accessible storage and permissions.

  • In conjunction with Microsoft best practices, Nerdio Manager can automate the installation of FSLogix on your desktop images.

  • FSLogix isn't directly supported by Nerdio and may require troubleshooting with Microsoft.

FSLogix Overview

The FSLogix Profile Container consists of the following components:

By default, Nerdio Manager automatically installs the FSLogix application when creating new session host VMs or re-imaging the existing ones. This setting can be controlled at the host pool level:

See FSLogix Settings and Configuration for details.

One common configuration scenario is to allow Nerdio Manager to fully handle FSLogix installation and configuration. This is the default use-case, and the following is true:

  • The FSLogix Profiles path is configured in Nerdio Manager under the Settings page and/or at each host pool, as shown in the image above.

  • FSLogix apps are NOT installed on the desktop image.

  • FSLogix registry settings are NOT set on the desktop image.

  • There are no GPOs in the environments controlling FSLogix configuration.

The alternative to the default method shown above is to manage FSLogix installation and configuration manually instead of allowing Nerdio Manager to do it. In this scenario, the following must be true:

  • The Use FSLogix Profile setting must be toggled OFF on all host pools.

  • The FSLogix application must be installed on the desktop image.

  • The FSLogix configuration must be applied either via registry on the desktop image or with GPO.
