Overview of VPNs

Nerdio Manager allows you to easily manage the Azure VPN infrastructure for customer accounts, create the VPN gateway, and manage connections.

Create a VPN Gateway

Nerdio Manager allows you to create a VPN Gateway for a customer.

To create a VPN Gateway:

  1. At the Account level, navigate to NetworkVPN.

  2. Select Add VPN Gateway.

  3. Enter the following information:

    • Name: Type the VPN Gateway's name.

Note: The name can be up to 80 characters. The name can contain letters, numbers, underscores, periods, and hyphens. The name must begin and end with a letter or number.

    • SKU: From the drop-down list, select the Azure SKU for the VPN Gateway.

Note: The Basic SKU supports 10 site-to-site connections at 100 Mbps. Other SKUs support more connections at faster speeds, with more advanced VPN features. See this Microsoft article for more details.

    • VNet: From the drop-down list, select the virtual network to be connected to the VPN.

Note: A Gateway subnet is automatically created for the VPN Gateway.

    • Gateway Subnet Address Range: Type the address range information for the gateway subnet.

Note: If a Gateway subnet has already been created, the address range is displayed here. The size of the range must be at least /29, but Microsoft recommends that you create a gateway subnet of /27 or larger (/27, /26, etc.), if you have the available address space to do so. This accommodates most configurations.

  4. Once you have entered all the desired information, select OK.

The VPN Gateway creation task starts. You can follow the task's progress in the VPN Tasks section.

Reset a VPN Gateway

If there are connectivity issues between the networks, it may help to reset the VPN Gateway.

To reset a VPN Gateway:

  1. At the Account level, navigate to NetworkVPN.

  2. Locate the VPN you wish to work with.

  3. From the action menu, select Reset.

  4. On the pop-confirmation window, select Confirm.

The VPN Gateway reset task starts. You can follow the task's progress in the VPN Tasks section.

Create a VPN Connection

Once a VPN is created, you can add connections to the VPN.

To create a VPN connection:

  1. At the Account level, navigate to NetworkVPN.

  2. Locate the VPN you wish to work with.

  3. Select Connections and then select Add connection.

  4. Enter the following information:

    • Name: Type the connection's name.

Note: The name can be up to 80 characters. The name can contain letters, numbers, underscores, periods, and hyphens. The name must begin and end with a letter or number.

    • Shared Key: Type the shared key.

Note: The key can be up to 128 characters. The key should not contain spaces, hyphens, or tildes.

    • Local Network Gateway: Select Use existing if you have previously created a local network gateway and from the drop-down list select the local network gateway. Otherwise, select Create new and specify the following details for the local network gateway.

      • Region: From the drop-down list, select the region.

      • Peer IP: Type the Peer IP address of the device the VPN connects to on the remote side.

      • Local Network: Type the network range of the remote network the VPN connects to in CIDR notation.

Note: Once you enter the first network range, select Add address space to add additional ranges, if necessary.

  5. Once you have entered all the desired information, select OK.

    Notes:

    • Be sure to configure the VPN device on the remote network to use the same Shared Key and your Gateway's public IP address.

    • From the action menu, select Edit to edit the VPN connection settings.

    • From the action menu, select Edit Local Network Gateway to edit the local network gateway settings..

    • Once the connection is created, on the VPN Gateway's Connections page, the Status column should change to Connected.

Nerdio Manager allows you to view connection settings.

  2. Locate the VPN you wish to work with.
