How do I Enable Backups for my Desktop Images

A desktop image serves as the "golden image" for a host pool. It is used to create new session hosts or to re-image existing session hosts. A desktop image consists of two Azure objects-- a VM used to manage the image and another object that is the actual image used to deploy session hosts.

You must install the latest Windows updates, application updates, or install new apps on the desktop image first and then update the hosts in host pools. In some rare situations, you may need to revert the changes applied to your desktop image.

Create Backups for Desktop Images

Nerdio Manager allows you to create backups of a desktop image.

To create backups for desktop images:

1. In Nerdio Manager, at the Account level, navigate to Desktop Images.

2. Locate the desktop image you wish to work with.

3. From the action menu, if the desktop image is powered off, select Set as image. If the desktop image is powered on, select Power off & set as image.

   

4. Be sure to select the Save current image as a backup option.

   The Set as image task starts. You can follow its progress in the Desktop Images Tasks section.

Manage Images in Azure

Once you select the Save current image as a backup option for a desktop image, Azure retains the existing image as a stand-alone object and does not overwrite it with a new one. However, you won't be able to view or manage this image from Nerdio Manager, so make sure to delete it manually to avoid Azure storage costs.

To manage images in Azure:

1. In the Azure portal, search for Images.

   

2. Select the image you wish to delete.

   

3. Confirm this is the image you want to delete and then select Delete.
