Azure Troubleshooting

AVD has been an amazing product for our clients and for the most part all view it as a positive future direction. This migration has not been without its bumps.  Troubleshooting performance or general system issues has not be easy and working with our CSP or Microsoft gives us little help.  It would be interesting to see how the community is handling some of the issues we are facing.

1. How many user can we get on a system.  We general use GPU machines for our client type.  We are continually reducing the number of users per VM due to poor performance. System resources don't point to an issue. RAM and CPU are not maxed. The disks used are Performance.

2. Window Store. With multiple clients the Store and its apps just fail. The Store and it's apps will disappear from the VM's. We powershell them back but should we have too?

3. User profiles (FSLogix). Users will loose settings like default programs and software/Windows customization from day to day.

Hey Gregg,

I may have some info and links below that may help here:

1. How many user can we get on a system.  We general use GPU machines for our client type.  We are continually reducing the number of users per VM due to poor performance. System resources don't point to an issue. RAM and CPU are not maxed. The disks used are Performance.  I would first check our performance troubleshooting guide in the link below, especially the disk portion.  Disk or Azure Files speed/IOPS can vary based on the size of the disk and can be limited by the VM series.   Azure files performance increases as the quota size of the share increases.  Nerdio Manager for MSP now includes some auto-scaling features for Azure Files if you're using NMM and Azure files, this may help if you've ruled out VM performance (CPU/Memory).

Here's that troubleshooting guide:

Here's that overview of Azure Files auto-scaling via NMM:

https://help.nerdio.net/hc/en-us/articles/4409281168653-Auto-scale-functionality-for-Azure-files-in-NMM

This sizing strategy guide from the Nerdio Academy may help as well:

2. Window Store. With multiple clients the Store and its apps just fail. The Store and it's apps will disappear from the VM's. We powershell them back but should we have too? You'll want to ensure you're publishing these apps as per Microsoft's documentation on your image

If using NMM and AVD ARM:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/publish-apps

If using NFA and AVD Classic:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/virtual-desktop-fall-2019/publish-apps-2019

3. User profiles (FSLogix). Users will loose settings like default programs and software/Windows customization from day to day.  This almost sounds like either the VHD(x) is not updating or possibly the user logging in to a host where the FSLogix services are not running.  I've recently posted this below which may help review:

Hopefully this all helps,
